PREP ROUNDUP Yuba City wrestling takes down rival Falcons

R.V. girl’s offense goes off in 60-42 win

The Honkers came away with a sound 61-15 win over the Falcons on Wednesday.

Yuba City saw wins from multiple varsity wrestlers, which included: Nathaniel Ramirez (win by forfeit), Keola Abreu (win by major decision), Michael Tejada (win by forfeit), Jonathan Mcguire (win by decision in overtime), Mason Chappell (win by second round pin), Erik Palmquist (win by forfeit), Ikia Garcia (win by forfeit), Nathaniel George (win by forfeit), Emiliano Murillo (win by first round pin), Robert Teal (win by forfeit) and lastly, heavy weight Gilberto Vela (win by forfeit).

Meanwhile Ariana Burr represente­d the girl’s team by taking a win with a first round pin.

As for the junior varsity team, Isaias Adams

won by a first round pin.

The varsity’s next match will be on Dec. 15 at Wheatland High School. The girl’s next match will be on Dec. 14 at Hardwood Palace in Roseville and the junior varsity team’s next match will be on Dec. 15 at Whitney High School.

GIRL’S SOCCER Live Oak 3, Esparto 0 In Esparto – The Lions came away with a shutout road win on Thursday as they used their offense to best Esparto by three goals.

Baylee Alvardo scored an early goal to put the Lions up 1-0. Then, after an own goal by Esparto, Cissy Acosta netted the final goal in the last moments of the match.

Live Oak (6-2-2) will next host Hamilton on Tuesday. Kick off is set for 3:15 p.m.

BOY’S SOCCER Colusa 3, Pierce 1 In Colusa – The Redhawks came away with a solid victory at home on Thursday.

Standout performanc­es came from Leo Guzman who was able to net two goals and Victor Hernandez who added a goal later in the game.

The Redhawks (2-2-1) will now have some time off before heading to Redding Christian on Dec. 17 for another league match up.

GIRL’S BASKETBALL Gridley 72, Pierce 35 In Orland – The Bulldogs were able to grab a sound win on Thursday over Pierce.

Maddyson Tull led the way with 26 points and eight assists. Also contributi­ng were Ally Mardesich with 17 points and Kennedy Tull with 20 points.

Gridley will face the winner of Durham and Etna today in the Orland tournament. River Valley 60, Argonaut 42

In Lincoln – The Falcons were to secure a win on Thursday in their first game of the Chavez classic.

Jasmine Gill led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and eight blocks. Also contributi­ng was Izzy Tinoco with 14 points and four rebounds.

River Valley (5-4) will continue tournament action today when they take on Rio Linda at 6:30 p.m.

Colusa 34, Quincy 28 In Hamilton City – The Redhawks did just enough to get by Quincy in the first round of the Marty Passaglia Tournament.

Carly Lay finished with 14 points while Abby Huskey and Jaycee Brackett who was not tendered a contract this offseason. Hernández was the only outfielder who played three positions for the club last season, but he finished the year with a .285 on-base percentage and recently signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox.

The Giants were the only franchise to add two players during the Rule 5 draft, but the club had plenty of roster flexibilit­y after non-tendering Hernández and reliever Hunter Strickland at the end of November. Shelley has worked for the organizati­on for the past 24 years and couldn’t recall another offseason in which the Giants made two Rule 5 additions, but the franchise has struggled with depth issues for the last two years.

San Francisco did not lose any players during pitched in with six points apiece.

Colusa (5-5) takes on Chester today. Rio Linda 33, Yuba City 27 In Lincoln – The Honkers fell to Rio Linda on Thursday in what proved to be a defensive match up. No player stats were provided after the game.

Yuba City will be back in action today when they play Argonaut at 3:30 p.m. Woodland Christain 62,

Lindhurst 28 In Olivehurst – The Blazers fell at home on Thursday to Lindhurst by a wide margin.

Despite the loss, Danika Martina was able to tally 11 points while Jadelyn English grabbed six rebounds.

Lindhurst (1-8) will play at home against Las Plumas on Tuesday. BOY’S BASKETBALL

Freshmen Oak Ridge 74, Marysville 41

(Wednesday) In Mira Loma – The Indians fell in a tough game against Oak Ridge on Wednesday night.

While things may not have gone their way, the Indians saw a great performanc­e from Khris Bridgers with 15 points in the contest. Bradshaw Christian 76,

Marysville 66 In Marysville – The Indians the major league portion of Thursday’s Rule 5 draft, but three of the organizati­on’s minor league prospects were selected in the Triple-a phase.

The Minnesota Twins took right-handed reliever Dusten Knight, the Arizona Diamondbac­ks selected outfielder Jeffrey Baez and the Tampa Bay Rays chose another right-handed reliever, Ian Gardeck. San Francisco drafted third baseman Peter Maris out of the Rays organizati­on and left-handed pitcher Sam Moll from the Blue Jays in the Triple-a phase.

Moll made his major league debut with the Oakland A’s in 2017, appearing in 11 games while posting a 10.80 ERA.

Players chosen during the Triple-a Rule 5 draft must remain on the active Triple-a roster for the duration of the following season. fell in a hard fought battle on Thursday after losing to Bradshaw Christian by ten points.

Junior Varsity River Valley 71, Woodland 38 In Rosemont – The Falcons were able to find a hefty win on Thursday as they used a stout offensive showing in their victory.

River Valley was led by Jude Guerrero with 12 points and Gavin Janda with 12 points.

The Falcons JV team (5-4) will be back in action today in tournament play.

Sutter 56, Pierce 41 In Colusa – The Huskies JV squad was able to edge out Pierce on Thursday morning.

Sutter was led by Kyle Watson with 18 points, Aryan Sharma with 15 points and Gavin Gardener with 10 points.

The Huskies will play today against Corning at 10:30 a.m. in the Colusa tournament.

Varsity Lower Lake 53, Williams 50

In Colusa – Despite a 27 point effort from Anthony Davalos, the Yellowjack­ets fell in the first round at the 38th Annual Georgia Raczniak Tournament.

Mo Hernandez added 10 points in the back and forth affair, that saw the ‘Jackets unable to recover from some critical turnovers.

Williams (9-3) will face the loser of the game between Colusa and Corning on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Pierce 60, Yreka 18 In Colusa – The Bears saw their 17-point halftime dissipate in the second half but held on to advance to second round in the winner’s bracket at the Raczniak Tournament in Colusa.

Daniel Medina poured in a game high 24 points while Jonathan Corchado added 20 more to lead Pierce.

The Bears (6-2) face Marysville (7-1) tonight at 6 p.m.

Corning 61, Colusa 54 In Colusa – The Redhawks rallied ferociousl­y in the final minutes of the game to pull within six points but could get no closer and fell in the first game of their own Georgia Raczniak Tournament.

Christian Mata had a team high 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Colusa. Sammy Moreno also added 9 points while Conner Saso chipped in with eight points.

Colusa (5-4) will be back in action today when they host rival Williams at 4:30 p.m.

The deadline for calling in sports scores has been moved to 9:30 p.m. during the week.
