Resilience IPA on tap at local brewery to help Camp Fire victims

More than 1,400 breweries around the world are banding together to release a special beer created by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. to raise funds for Camp Fire victims. Yubasutter residents will have a chance to buy a pint on Friday when a local brewery opens up its tap for the first time.

Sutter Buttes Brewing is the only local brewer joining the fundraising effort – the next closest being in Oroville, Chico and Sacramento. The local company’s brewmaster first started the batch of Resilience Butte County Proud IPA two weeks ago and plans on unveiling it on Friday.

“We made a full, 10-barrel batch, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward helping the fire victims,” said Scott Sargent, owner of Sutter Buttes Brewing. “Sierra Nevada has a relief fund set up to help the Camp Fire victims, so everything we make will be sent directly to the fund.”

Sierra Nevada came up with the recipe for the 6.8 percent ABV India pale ale. Shortly after the fire started, the company reached out to others in the industry asking if they’d be interested in selling it as part of the fundraising effort. More than 1,400 breweries signed on, with Sierra Nevada’s suppliers donating the ingredients for participants to use.

All of the funds go to the Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund, supported through the Golden Valley Bank Community Foundation. The company got the funding started with its own $100,000 donation.

“We are humbled to be able to help out with this effort. It’s truly amazing how quick they put all of this together and got everyone on board,” said Chris Pickens, brewmaster for Sutter Buttes Brewing. “When we first saw they were doing this, everybody wanted to get involved. We all wanted to be a part of it.”

Sargent said the brewery – 421 Center St., Yuba City – is planning a release party starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Sierra Nevada Brewing’s goal is to raise more than $10 million in the fundraising effort to rebuild in Butte County, according to its website.

The Camp Fire that started on Nov. 8 destroyed a total of over 153,000 acres, nearly 19,000 structures, and claimed the lives of 86 people, according to Cal Fire.
