A monthly event showcasing Marysville’s history is scheduled to get some attendees with first-hand experience of a notorious era.

History Talks, presented by the Historic Marysville Art Club, is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. today at the Silver Dollar Saloon, 330 First St., Marysville. Guest speakers with intimate knowledge will share their thoughts on the Juan Corona case. Corona, a serial murderer, picked up some of his victims at the Silver Dollar Saloon.

“Normally, we choose a different location and talk history, but this particular month, we decided to have it at the Silver Dollar Saloon. I thought it would be good to ask some of the people who were involved in the Juan Corona case,” said Judy Mann, who organizes the talks. “I asked Roy Whiteaker, who was a young sheriff at the time of the Juan Corona case, and he said he’d come and join the tour.”

Once Mann got Whiteaker on board, other people started calling to join the tour.

“Now people are coming out of the woodwork. A guy called and said he’s got the truck that Juan Corona picked up his victims in,” she said. “Arturo Marquez called and asked if we have room on the tour. He was a part of one of the later Juan Corona trials.”

Mann said this is the fifth in the series of History Talks and each one focuses on a different aspect of the town’s history with guests bringing images, maps, memorabilia and sharing stories about that time period.

“Anna Hill has some interesting information on the case and will bring her documents to share,” she said. “She’s focusing on the lives of the victims of Juan Corona.”

Mann said the event is full for today, but they’re planning on hosting a second History Talks covering the same topic in the near future due to numerous people wanting to attend.

Next month’s History Talks will focus on growing up in Marysville’s Chinatown during the Bok Kai Festival.

That talk will be led by Gordon Tom, who grew up in Marysville’s Chinatown, and takes place at the Suey Sing Association building.
