A Marysville man was arrested Wednesday after throwing hot coffee on and punching a store clerk because he was Muslim.

John Crain, 43, a transient, was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime, battery with serious bodily injury and robbery. He was booked into Yuba County Jail.

Marysville police responded to the incident just before 2 a.m. at the 7-11 on Ninth Street and spoke with the store clerk, who was the victim, according to a department press release. The victim reported a white man entered the store, prepared a cup of coffee and tried to leave without paying for it. The clerk confronted the man at the front door of the store when Crain allegedly threw the hot coffee on the clerk’s face, then punched him in the face and fled.

The victim sustained injuries from the hot coffee and a contusion to his face from the punch, and officers were able to obtain video surveillance of the incident, according to the release.

Hours later, around 12:30 p.m., officers again responded to the 7-11 for an assault and when arriving, saw a white man walking away from the area matching the description from the assault earlier in the day. Officers contacted Crain who admitted to the assault, saying he hates Muslims and attacked the clerk because he was Muslim.

Given the fact that there’s very little rain in the forecast, Brown said things look good, but reminds people to be prepared.

“Even so, residents should always remember that we live our lives along the banks of some major rivers, so we should always be prepared, even when the sun is shining,” he said. “To be prepared for any emergency, have your gobags ready and sign up to receive emergency alerts at: www.bepreparedyuba.org.”

In Sutter County, Fifiled, Kempton, Keys and Brewer roads have been closed since Wednesday. Hicks, Bear River, Placer, Ahlf, and Pleasant Grove roads, as well as Nicolaus Avenue, have been closed since Thursday. Pass and Hughes roads have been closed since Friday, according to the county website.

Sutter County spokesman Chuck Smith said rising water levels along the Sacramento River caused some flooding at Lovey’s Landing Trailer Park in Meridian.

“The Sacramento River is expected to crest Saturday,” he said. “All roads through the bypass are closed.”

Smith also said the homeless on the Feather River were impacted by the rising water levels.
