The Yuba City baseball team stepped up to the plate on Wednesday night as the Honkers secured a 12-4 victory against its rival, River Valley.

“We came out and wanted to jump on them early to send the message and we did, so I’m pretty pleased with that,” said Honkers coach Dave Rodriguez. “Anytime there’s a rivalry game the emotions can be high, so you just have to keep your concentration and play hard.”

The Honkers came out in the bottom of the first inning and put up a three spot. Followed by another run in the third inning when the home team capitalized off of a wild pitch by River Valley.

The fourth inning proved to be the best offensive showing by the Honkers as seven runners crossed home plate, five of which came with two outs in the innings.

“We always tell our players to keep that two-out mentality, get on base and drive the runners in,” said Rodriguez.

River Valley was able to answer in the sixth and seventh innings when they scored four runs, but it was too little too late as the Honkers took the game by a final score of 12-4.

Yuba City finished the outing with a team total of 13 hits and five walks.

Standout performances included Yuba City’s Brad Madison, who went 4-for-4 with two singles and two doubles as well as Brennan White who had three singles on the evening.

River Valley (2-4) will look to bounce back when they face Roseville on Monday.

Yuba City (5-4) will have some time off before gearing up to play Granite Bay on March 29.
