Paper Mache

- By David Read

So are there any film fans out there? How about amateur or professional filmmakers in the area? We are heading into awards season so there is lots of buzz around various films. Has anyone seen “Breaking News in Yuba County?” Not much buzz about that one despite the catchy name and a great cast. Did I mention it was filmed in Natchez, Mississippi?

I am a lifelong lover of the cinema. I also like the short film form. I missed not being able to go the Crest Theater in Sacramento last year to see the short live action and animated films that were up for Academy Award consideration. You know, those films that you never get to see otherwise unless they happen to appear someday on Youtube.

How would you feel about a local film festival featuring original short films, all filmed in Yuba and Sutter Counties? This idea was proposed recently by one of our Board members. We are all filmmakers these days with our remarkable “smart” phones with which entire full-length films have been made. Remember the book we created a few years back; “A Day in the Life of Yuba-sutter?” All the photos were made in our two counties. This would be the cinematic version with widespread community participation.

If all goes well, we will have a film festivalstyle screening of the submissions in September. Entries will be limited to twelve minutes or less total running time.

You can tell a great story even in a very short film. Remember “Bambi Meets Godzilla?” It was only 90 seconds long.

This is all still in the planning stage, but we like the idea.

Highlights this next week include “Loving Out Loud,” poets reading their poems at Presidential Inaugurations, a Day of Remembrance commemoration, and a tour of the newly completed Arboga Assembly Center Memorial

Park. More on these and other upcoming events at YSAC’S Facebook page and Youtube Channel.
