Donnell David Iden died peacefully at home and in the company of his immediate family on March 19, 2021, after a brief but valiant struggle with cancer. Born in Marysville on April 12, 1930, second son to William Raymond Iden and Madelyn Blanch Snell, Iden graduated from the Notre Dame Convent, went on to Marysville High School where he excelled in academics and athletics. During his junior year he was selected by the student body to attend Boys State. A year later he enrolled at Santa Clara University, majoring in Philosophy and History and graduating with his Bachelor's of Arts degree in 1951. Finally Iden entered the Fruit Science Masters Program at Cal Poly, earning his Masters degree the following year.

He had been courting Betty Colleen Owen during his high school years and in 1953 they married in a double ring ceremony at St. Joseph's Church in Marysville, initially making their home in Yuba City. I d e n was f i r s t e mployed by Filice and Pirelli, a northern California canner based in Gilroy. A few years later Filice and Pirelli was merged into the California Canners and Growers Cooperative with headquarters in San Francisco. As Iden preferred to remain in the Yuba Sutter Butte area with their four young children he chose to leave the Canning Cooperative and bought the Country Kitchen restaurant and Country Lanes Bowl in Gridley i n 1964, a town in which many l a s t i ng friendships originated during his tenure. Over the next eight years he and his wife Colleen and Chef Lawrence Carr worked literally around the clock, turning the restaurant into one of the region's most popular places to eat. In 1972 Iden and Carr teamed up to begin a new restaurant venture called the Chateau in Marysville. In 1976 Iden was co-opted by Pacific Coast Producers, another northern California canner then based in Santa Clara and a few years later was appointed Vice President, Field Operations, interfacing with growers in a long and broad s wa t h from northern to southern California, a job which he dispatched with skill and aplomb until he retired in 1995.

Gifted with perfect pitch, Iden grew up with a piano and an accordion as a child and became over time an accomplished ragtime pianist, able to play Scott Joplin, Blind Leroy Garnett, Ed. B. Claypoole, among others by heart ( a n d o n c o mmand, which he happily obliged). This ability made him the life of every party.

Iden is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, their four children Mark David, John Christopher, Lisa Marie (Iden-monroe) and Michael, Lisa's husband, and Matthew Peter and Kimberly (Matthew's wife), as well as grandchildren Matt Junior from Idaho, Eric from Sacramento, Marissa from San Diego, Mackenzie Jane from Santa Cruz, Taylor from Santa Barbara, Zachary from Santa Cruz and Sanne Iden, beloved daughterin-law, Hannover, Germany.

A High Mass for the deceased will be held in I d e n' s honor a t S t . Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Marysville on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. The Holy Rosary will be offered prior to the Mass at 10:00 a.m. He has requested any donations to be made to Father Michael, Pastor of St. Joseph's, Marysville, California.
