Local families hunt for eggs

- By Jeff Larson jlarson@appealdemocrat.com

Easter weekend typically means warmer weather and lots of eggs. There was an added component this year due to COVID-19 – facial coverings.

It was definitely a different type of celebration as YubaSutter Marketplace Manager Lynette Myers noted on

Saturday in between multiple scheduled Easter Egg Hunts for local children 12 and under.

Each hunt was pre-registered online and spaced out so families would not mingle with each other.

Each of the three sections had 100 eggs spread out for the kids to hunt, Myers said.

“The kids are having a blast,” she said.

Halfway through the day, Myers said 12 families had participated in a hunt in the south parking lot of the YubaSutter Marketplace.

One Yuba City family had two children participate.

Desiree Lawless’ youngest son, Tyler, 2, was out in public for the first time hunting eggs with his older brother, Dylan, 6.

Lawless said the excitement in both her children’s eyes was evident.

She also enjoyed the new format of keeping families separated because it is not as chaotic as a more traditional community egg hunt.

“I like this,” Lawless said. “The (marketplace) always has fun events for kids and

in person, for local music teachers.”

According to the 2021 TCMC Planning Team, this year’s contest will be recorded live at the theater but only parents of participating children will be allowed to accompany each student. Judging will happen remotely and winners will be announced at a later

date.

This year a new category, Jazz/improv, has been added to the lineup. Original compositions are both accepted and encouraged as well, and will be included as part of the Contemporary period.

Participants will be required to perform a memorized piece or pieces, ranging from up to 3-12 minutes, depending on age.

Those interested in participating must submit an application by midnight on Saturday, April 10.

A performance and recording schedule will be sent out to teachers and parents of participants after the application deadline.
