Robert (Bob) Arnold Aaberg lost his seven year battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 79 on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 surrounded by family.

Bob was born in Portland, Oregon on October 28, 1943 to Lois and Arnold Aaberg. The timber industry brought his family to Marysville soon after WWII where Bob lived for the rest of his life. He attended Linda and Alicia schools then graduated from Marysville High School in 1961. Yuba College and Sacramento State followed with graduations in 1963 and 1965. Later he earned a Masters of Arts in Education from the University of San Francisco.

Sports captured Bob’s interest as a young boy, and soon proudly became part of the Knothole gang of emerging baseball players that marched from downtown Marysville to Bryant Field to root on the semi-pro Marysville Giants. Bob played baseball and basketball for Marysville High School, Yuba College, and Sacramento State. Always known as “the lefty pitcher,” he helped Sacramento State win the coveted Far Western Conference and

Western Regional in 1964. He also played several semi-pro seasons with the Marysville Giants and one for the Humboldt Crabs.

Bob enjoyed teaching Physical Education for 39 years. Starting his career at alma mater Marysville High School, he then became part of the inaugural staff team to open Lindhurst High School. His career included decades of coaching boys and girls basketball along with varsity baseball. He embraced the role of teacher and coach. To that end he believed in creating successful student athletes and promoting fitness for life. Bob served as Physical Education Department Chair and Athletic Director at Lindhurst before retiring in 2005.

Bob loved competition and teamwork. He was humbled and honored to earn accolades throughout his athletic endeavors. Among the highlights were inductions into the Northern California Sports Association (2008), Yuba College (2009), and Lindhurst High School (2018) Halls of Fame.

Retirement was busy with his favorite pastimes of family, friends, travel, hunting, fishing, golf and grandkids.

Though times got tough throughout his cancer journey, Bob never gave up hope for a cancer cure. To that end, he participated in four clinical trials at Stanford and U.C. Davis. He always wanted to help future cancer victims and in doing so never lost his wit or sense of humor.

Bob is survived by wife Nancy Aaberg, son Kevin (Mary) Aaberg, daughter Kristen (Greg) Mathews, sister Shirley (Don) Hale, sister Marilyn (Wayne) Russell, sisters-in-law Barbara Aaberg and Carol (Peter) Harrison, brothers-in-law Michael (Jennifer) and Thomas (Lori) Hudson, grandchildren Alexandria, Charlotte, Quinn Small, Ella Aaberg, Luke and Annabelle Mathews, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brotherin-law, uncle, friend, and person.

Bob is predeceased by his parents Lois and Arnold Aaberg and his brother Bill Aaberg.

The family would like to thank Sutter North Hospice, nurse Gurpreet Lakhat, and friend Joe Klaker for their special role in his final days. Arrangements are under the direction of Trident Society Roseville.

A Celebration of Life is planned for 2PM on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
