Dale C. Davis

-

Dale Elizabeth (Caldwell) Davis passed away on February 7, 2024, after a long battle with multiple myeloma. She spent her last moments in the Nicolaus, CA, home where she had lived since 1962.

Dale was born in 1931, in Oakland, CA, to Millard and Ruth Caldwell, their only child. She developed an early affection for horses and tennis, and a lifelong passion for education, no doubt inherited from her schoolteacher mother.

After graduating from Albany High School in the East Bay, she spent one semester at UC Berkeley before transferring to Stanford University. It was there that her life changed dramatically.

She met a young Central Valley farmer who had recently been discharged from the U.S. Army named John (Jack) Davis. Things proceeded swiftly and they were married in December of 1951, and settled in his hometown of Nicolaus, CA. After a few years of rice farming, Jack was hired as an engineer by Aerojet Corporation in Sacramento, CA, and the Davis family lived the suburban life in Carmichael, CA.

During this time, Dale and Jack raised their four children (all boys) - Lauren, Peter, Stuart and Scott. The family moved back to Nicolaus, CA, in 1962, to the house Jack built next to his boyhood home, and have been there ever since.

Dale got involved in every community activity that was available Cub Scouts, Little League, Sunday School, Bridge Club, etc. While Jack ran the farm, Dale created a business raising and selling pheasants commercially, and later used her knowledge of agriculture and accounting to perform bookkeeping and tax preparing services for many neighbors and local businesses.

When the community swimming pool was in danger of being shut down, she joined the effort to keep it going and helped manage the pool for many years. Dale also enjoyed serving on the board of the local newspaper, was Grand Marshall of the Nicolaus Labor Day Parade, and had the honor of serving on the Sutter County Board of Education for several terms.

Dale was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, who passed in 2013. She is survived by her four sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Fairview Community Church, 1991 Pacific Ave., Trowbridge, CA, on February 24, 2024, at 11am. Reception to follow in the church hall.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
