Storage Wars

-

I think Tuan needs to invest in his own cabinet or shelf at a data center. Oh, wait a minute— we are all averse to cloud storage, and not taking any chances of anyone snooping on our packets/ frames/segments of data. Twelve 12TB hard drives for 144TB of storage space? Holy moly! Do you really have that much data that you will take advantage of all the space? I suspect you have already considered a RAID 10 setup as well.

How about offsite storage considerations? Have you thought about installing a backup generator for your home. Perhaps two? Make sure they are of different makes, of course— but I suspect Tuan has this covered. May I recommend sourcing two different diesel fuel suppliers, too, just in case the supply chain is impacted by a power grid failure due to the electrical needs at his home? Perhaps a SAN would be more in order from NetApp or Dell EMC, or something?

Ahahahaha! Sorry, I just had to get that out there, but I can totally relate. Thinking about getting a NAS myself, and I’ll keep in mind the benchmark Tuan has set for his home storage needs.

– James “Changr” Chang EDITOR- IN- CHIEF TUAN NGUYEN RESPONDS: Actually, the 12x 12TB drives were just for one NAS— I have five. It’s pretty holy- moly, as you put it. For redundancy, they’re all running RAID 6, and they have scheduled hourly, daily, and weekly backups—between each other and to Amazon Cloud. I have a pretty extensive firewall appliance from Netgate, running pfSense, and it’s a 10gbit 1U firewall unit as well. All equipment is running off multiple APC Smart- UPS units, and I briefly considered a Tesla Powerwall 2 for the house. I decided against it in the end.
