- Megan Davis McDonald County Press mdavis@nwadg.com

Thanks to a charitable donation from a non-profit organization, McDonald County Sheriff’s Office K9 Cresso will soon be outfitted with a bullet- and stab-resistant vest.

Cresso is a 3-year-old male Belgian Malinois handled by Cpl. Tim Jeffers. They have been working together since December.

Jeffers learned about Vested Interest through Cpl. Matt Smith and K9 Lisa of Jasper County.

Each vest has a value between $1,795 – $2,234; a five-year warranty; and an average weight of 4 to 5 pounds. He will wear the vest during high risk situations and at his handler’s discretion.

Delivery is expected within 10 weeks.

Cresso is certified in narcotics detection and patrol.

To date, Cresso has sniffed out six narcotic finds with a no-bite apprehension.

Jeffers is a member in good standing with the Four States Police Canine Association, which certified Cresso.

Vested Interest in K9s Inc. is a nonprofit charity located in East Taunton, Mass., whose mission is to provide bullet- and stab-protective vests to dogs of law enforcement agencies throughout the United States. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially life-saving body armor for the four-legged officers.
