Bookmobile Was A Fixture In McDonald County

-

The McDonald County Library Bookmobile provided a wonderful service to county residents for many years.

After a 1-mill tax was passed in 1949 to support the public library, the state provided a bookmobile for the county. A few years later, the bookmobile, created from a converted school bus, was put into service.

The bookmobile made stops at rural schools and businesses throughout the county at least once a month. This was especially helpful to students, as well as women who were working at home.

Ted Stoutsenberger was the driver. If you know the names of any of the students in the photo, please contact the McDonald County Historical Society at 417-2237700 or email mcdonaldcohistory@olemac.net.

The rich history of the county is preserved by the historical society. Visit The McDonald County Courthouse Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday to learn more about McDonald County history and heritage. A new exhibit, 100 Years of Fashion, is now on display.
