Historical Society To Hear Granny Stories
Mary Mueller will read excerpts from “Granny Stories: Bible Stories Retold in Ozark Dialect” by Alice H. Tompkins at the Sunday, Sept. 25, meeting of the McDonald County Historical Society. The meeting will be held at the Pineville Community Center at 2 p.m.
Mary Mueller is no newcomer to history. She is related to Richard Everett, who established the first free elementary school in the 1630s in the Boston area. The love for education has extended through many generations. Mueller’s mother, Alice Tompkins, was a teacher and principal in McDonald County for 48 years. Mueller herself taught for three years prior to joining the staff at the Cornerstone Bank 35 years ago.
Tompkins, with the help of her daughter, Mary, wrote “Granny Stories” to help preserve the Ozark dialect. Tompkins was working on a second volume when she became ill.
