Orchard Festival Saturday

A WINTER EVENT IS ALSO PLANNED

- Rita Greene

Goodman is presenting its first Ozark Orchard Festival from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the ball field at 224 E. Garner.

The festival is happening thanks to Goodman Mayor Greg Richmond and several hard-working committee members.

Richmond had wanted to pull together this festival for a couple of years, said Paula Brodie, city clerk. His goal is for a lot of people to come and have a good time.

There will be a chili contest and everyone is invited to vote — dropping a dollar in the jar next to their favorite entry.

Goodman Meat Processing, at 125 N. Roy Hill, has donated the prize money for the best chili: $25, first prize; $15, second prize; and $10, third prize.

As well as chili, there will be several food vendors, candy apples, kettle corn — lots of food to satisfy everyone’s tastes.

There will be lots of activities for children including a petting zoo and bouncy toys.

This event is the first Ozark Orchard Festival in Goodman — most likely, there will be many more in the coming years.

Christmas Train

Coming

Another first for Goodman, which Mayor Richmond has initiated, is the Kansas City Southern’s Holiday Express train stopping at Goodman at 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at the intersection of North School Street and West B Avenue.

The KCS Holiday Express, which is also called The Christmas Train, is a festive train that brings Santa Claus and his elves to communities on the U.S. rail network.

Guests to the train can visit with Santa Claus and walk through three cars filled with holiday displays.

This has been a very popular event at neighboring communities such as Neosho, Mo., and Pittsburgh, Kan. Mayor Richmond is expecting a large crowd in Goodman when the Holiday Express rolls in.
