4-H Teaches Confidence, Success

-

My Name is Kyla Moore. I am a member of the Splitlog 4-H Club. I was a Clover Kid for three years and now I have finished my third year as a 4-H member.

I am very active in 4-H because my mother, aunt and uncle were all very active in Arkansas 4-H. My grandpa, a retired County Extension agent, has been a huge influence in my decision to be involved in 4-H. I also have two older cousins that have excelled in many areas of 4-H and have encouraged me to do the same and to set my goals high.

I have learned more than I expected this past year in my horse project, with the help of my cousin. She has helped me learn the importance of practicing riding my horse and how important good posture is. This lesson has helped me not only with riding my horse but I have competed in personal hygiene and posture is very important in that area of my interest, also. I have spent more time in my speaking and my horse care and competition than my photography and art projects.

I retired my crown for the McDonald County Fair Princess this past fair season. What a wonderful experience getting to talk to all of the participants at the fair. Just as I was very nervous last year, I had the opportunity to speak with the participants this year and wish them good luck.

During the fair I had the opportunity to show my heifer, Ritz. We won Grand Champion Crossbred heifer. She looked beautiful. I also participated in Junior Showmanship. It was a tough class this year but I was second behind a great friend and fellow Splitlog 4-H member. I have to remember there is always next year.

What I like most about 4-H is the opportunities that it has already presented me with. Without my experiences in 4-H I don’t know if I would have ever been able to speak in front of judges and large groups. This past year I had the chance to learn to play bells in front of the nursing home patients.
