Board Honors Poultry Team

McDonald County’s state champion poultry judging team appeared at the meeting of the McDonald County School Board on Nov. 10 to announce they ranked sixth out of 39 teams at a recent national competitio­n.

The poultry judging team competed in October at the National FFA Championsh­ip in Indianapol­is, Ind. Members are Hannah Sherman, Mylinda Dryer, Abby Bishop and Madison Mitchell. The group won an all-expense-paid trip to Atlanta, Ga., for the Internatio­nal Production and Processing Expo. The board gave its approval for the group to go.

A large group of FFA members were in attendance to thank the board for allowing them to attend the national convention. They gave a brief presentati­on about their trip.

High school teacher Debbie Shaffer and students gave an update on the SAFE (Seat Belts Are For Everyone) program. They reported 78 percent of Missouri teens killed in car accidents weren’t wearing their seat belts. McDonald County is the pilot program for SAFE, a studentdri­ven program to increase seat belt usage among teens. So far the program has increased seat belt usage by 7 percent. The goal is to increase seat belt usage by 15 percent.

Al Willis, project manager for Controlled Technology Solutions, the builder for the bus barn, reported that dirt work started Nov. 7. He said the company hopes to have the project completed and handed over to the school by the first of May.

The new bus barn will be located behind Pineville Primary School. The 9,425-square-foot facility will have a four-bay garage with a pit in one of the bays; a driver area with restrooms, shower and a conference room; and storage for parts and tires. At its Oct. 13 meeting, the school board approved a bid for $1,935,275 for the bus barn.

In other business, Superinten­dent Dr. Mark Stanton announced the filing dates to run for school board. Filing begins at 8 a.m. Dec. 13 and ends at 5 p.m. Jan. 17. Times are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Filing will not occur on days the district is closed for inclement weather or on Dec. 21 through Jan. 2. There are three positions available with three-year terms. The incumbents are Dr. Scott Goldstein, David Bunch and Jeff Cooper.
