Anderson Buying A Police Vehicle

- Megan Davis

Anderson City Council approved the purchase of a new patrol vehicle during the regular council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Mayor John Sellers explained that purchasing a new vehicle is now feasible because of the influx of revenue generated from the sale of the cell tower in town.

The vehicle will be purchased at a cost of $19,200. It is all-wheel drive, comes equipped with lightbar, switch box, and siren, and has 55,000 miles or less on the odometer.

Alderman Chester Neel noted that Lanagan is interested in purchase the vehicle that the new purchase will replace. He suggested that the city sell the vehicle to Lanagan for $1 in an act of good will. The council agreed.

Police Chief Daniel Gardner requested clarification on the city’s sick-time policy. Sellers asked that council members review the phrasing before the next meeting.

Fire Chief Shelby Turner noted that the call volume is going “in the right direction” and emergency situations have decreased during December.

He informed the council a portion of the new gear that was recently ordered is ready to be picked up.

Public Works Director Dane Small noted that the Water Department’s call volume is on the rise as the temperatures are dropping.

Mayor Sellers told the council that no bids were received on the water-line project in town.

After discussion, the council voted to hire a contractor to complete as many feet of work as possible within a $4,900 budget.
