The last day of 2016 ended with a bang for several area girls who attended the Young Outdoorsmen United “Pink Pistol Plink” on New Year’s Eve.

Several girls and their moms gathered on the banks of Indian Creek near Anderson, Mo., where they experienced firearm safety, shooting handguns of multiple calibers, and a creek-side lunch. A non-typical December temperature made it the perfect day to be outside.

After a briefing on safety, grip, aiming, stance and range etiquette, the young ladies rotated to shooting stations with different handguns at each table — .22-caliber, .38-caliber and .45-caliber. After all the shooting stations were completed, some friendly accuracy competition was held including a mother/ daughter team-shooting match. “I thought the squirrel targets were fun to shoot at,” said Shelby Knott from Rocky Comfort. “I shot one in the tail!”

A big pot of chili and grilled hot dogs were waiting for the participants and volunteers after testing their shooting skills. Awards and door prizes were presented during mealtime. All the young and grown-up participants showed their appreciation by thanking the volunteers for their help and instructions, and prompted Paige Newhard of Anderson, to say “This was fun, I like coming to the events you have. I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Young Outdoorsmen United hosts an outdoor activity event each and every month. Follow the organization’s activities on Facebook or their website at youngout doorsmenunited.com.
