MU Extension Ag Programs In SW Missouri
— Agriculture and other specialists in southwest Missouri working with University of Missouri Extension are planning a large number of winter trainings and conferences covering a variety of timely agriculture and horticulture topics.
The list of programs is growing daily. A regularly updated list can be found on the Greene County Extension website at http://extension.missouri.edu/greene.
Here are the January events that are known at this time, but keep checking back. Several conferences are still in the planning stages including a cattle health workshop for Greene County.
Some private pesticide applicator trainings are planned for this month. Call the nearest county extension office to get the date and time of the local training. In addition to those certification trainings, a number of other agriculture programs are planned.
Winter Dairy Day, Tues, Feb. 7, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Alice Irene’s Restaurant in Marionville, (formerly known as the Crane Dairy Day). Topics include farm succession planning, top ten benchmarks for successful dairies, reduced-lignin alfalfa and a youth panel on the future of the dairy industry. $5 fee to attend. Growing the Grower Series: High Tunnels and other Crop Protection Structures, Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Hollister FFA Ag Building, $5 charge, preregistration requested by calling Sara Wikoff at 417-334-4544 ext. 252.
Missouri Master Beekeeper Program, “Introduction to Bees and Beekeeping Class,” 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Feb. 11, Howell County, West Plains, MO, 417-256-2391.
Missouri Fence Law, Monday, Feb. 13, in West Plains, Marshfield, Stockton, and Pineville.
Barton County Soils and Crops Conference, Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 9 a.m., at the Thiebaud Auditorium. Cost $5, includes lunch. RSVP to 417-682-3579. Topics: Johnson Grass Control, 2017 Soybean Weed Management, Soil Health Assessment Survey Update, Nitrogen Timing for Corn and Pastures.
Stone County Livestock and Forage Conference, Thursday, Feb. 16, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Crane. Topics include weed and brush control, steer feed-out program and bermudagrass as a forage option. $5 fee. Preregister by calling the Stone County Extension Center at 417-3576812.
Master Gardener Core Training, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Feb. 16 to April 6, in Springfield. Most of the classes will be held at the Botanical Center. The cost to attend the classes is $150 per person or $255 for couples sharing a textbook. Newton County Hay School, Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Neosho High School FFA building. Cost $35, lunch included. Must register by calling 417-455-9500.
Grow Your Farm Series, scheduled on Monday evenings from Feb. 20 to Apr. 10, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Southwest Research Center in Mt. Vernon. Two Saturday farm tours are scheduled.
