He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Pat Cates; his four children, James W. Cates Jr., Rose Fortune, Debra Coffee and husband Danny, and Laura Cates and husband Stephen DeMoss; three grandchildren, John, Patricia Carlisle, and James W. Cates III and wife Kristi; and great-grandchild, James William Cates IV.
