‘Potting Shed University’ Programs Slated
SPRINGFIELD — Master Gardeners of Greene County are hosting seven diverse classes this spring as part of their annual Potting Shed University program.
These programs are on Monday nights from 6 p.m. t0 7 p. m. at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, 2400 S Scenic, Springfield. The cost is $5 per person and registration can be paid at the door starting at 5:30 p.m.
Kelly McGowan, horticulture educator with University of Missouri Extension and coordinator of the Master Gardener chapter, has released the list of upcoming classes and topics.
March 6 — “Composting made Simple,” taught by Melissa Sanford, Master Gardener of Greene County. Join this class as the instructor discusses composting at home and how anyone can each make a difference in the waste they generate.
March 20 — “Native Butterflies and Moths of MO,” taught by Kelly McGowan, horticulture educator, MU Extension. Learn how to identify these creatures and things any person can to do attract them to a yard or garden.
March 27 — “Garlic,” taught by Patrick Byers, horticulture specialist, MU Extension. Learn how to choose the right garlic strain, plant the crop, nurture garlic, harvest it, and store garlic for future use.
April 3 — “Fa i r - ies Gardens,” taught by Sharon Masterson, Master Gardener of Greene County. Share an evening learning about fairy gardening, creating and designing your own magical miniature world in gardens. It is a great way to garden without having a lot of room and it can take as little or as much time as you want to give.
April 10 — “Intro to Herbs,” taught by Barb Emge, Master Gardener of Greene County. Join this class as the instructor discusses growing 15 of the most common culinary herbs here in southwest Missouri.
April 17 — “Shade Gardening,” taught by Dellene Nelson, Master Gardener of Greene County. Gardening in the shade can be challenging but rewarding, Discover ways to have a beautiful garden and methods to deal with the adversities of planting in the shade.
April 24 — “Container Gardening,” taught by Mark and Renae Bernskoetter, Master Gardeners of Greene County. Container gardening is versatile and easy with helpful hints attendees will learn in this session.
The Master Gardener program is a popular statewide volunteer community- service organization administered through University of Missouri Extension. The organization’s goal is to train gardeners who are willing to share their knowledge with others. Master Gardeners become volunteers of University of Missouri Extension and donate hours for community educational projects in horticulture.
