Lady Mustangs Open Volleyball Season

The 2017 McDonald County Lady Mustangs volleyball team made its season debut by splitting two games with Diamond and dropping a pair of games to Monett and Seneca at a fourteam jamboree held on Aug. 15 at Seneca

High School.

The 2017 McDonald County Lady Mustang volleyball team made its season debut by splitting two games with Diamond and dropping a pair of games to Monett and Seneca at a four-team jamboree held on Aug. 15 at Seneca High School.

Against Diamond, the Lady Mustangs claimed a 15-10 win in the second game after dropping the first, 15-13. McDonald County led 8-7 midway through the match before outscoring the Lady Wildcats 7-3 down the stretch for the win.

In the first game, McDonald County led 13-12, but Diamond scored the final three points of the game for the win.

McDonald County opened the scrimmage by dropping a pair of games to Monett. The Lady Cubs jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first game on the way to a 15-11 decision.

The second game started much the same way the as the first, with the Lady Cubs taking an early 9-3 lead before McDonald County rallied only to come up short in a second consecutiv­e 15-11 loss.

In the final match of the night, McDonald County dropped a 15-13 decision to Seneca in the first game after rallying from a 12-8 deficit to tie the game at 12-12.

Seneca scored the first six points of the second game and cruised to a 15-8 win.

Mattie Leach led McDonald County with 10 kills and five service points. Katelyn Ferdig added five kills, while Nikki Salas

had four. Madison Hall dished out 24 assists, and Kaycee Factor led with six service points.

“The jamboree was a great way to showcase all the hard work these ladies have put in so far this season,” said coach Meghan Thompson. “These ladies work hard each day in and day out to better themselves both on and off the court. I have no doubt that we will have an excellent season ahead of us.”

McDonald County opens the season on Aug. 24 at home against Diamond. Matches begin at 5 p.m. with the freshman match followed by the junior varsity and varsity. On Saturday, McDonald County travels to Branson for its first tournament of the year.
