Lady Mustangs Can’t Overcome Early Deficits

Joplin McAuley swept both games to hand the McDonald County Lady Mustangs volleyball team a 25-13, 25-18 loss on Sept. 18 at MCHS.

The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first game and led 13-4 before McDonald County scored five consecutiv­e points to cut the deficit to 13-9.

But McAuley responded with six consecutiv­e points to stretch the margin to 20-9 on the way to a 25-13 win.

McAuley scored the first point of the second game, but McDonald County reeled of five straight points to take a 5-1 advantage.

The Lady Warriors battled back to trail 7-6, then scored six consecutiv­e points for a 12-7 lead. McDonald County trailed 16-12 when McAuley scored four straight points for a 20-12 lead.

McDonald County cut the lead to six points twice late in the game, but could get no closer in the 25-18 loss.

McAuley won the junior varsity match 25-15, 20-25, 25-21.

McDonald County falls to 0-13 heading into its Sept. 19 game against Mount Vernon. The Lady Mustangs host Carthage on Sept. 21. Matches begin at 5 p.m. with a freshman match.

Joplin High School

Joplin defeated McDonald County 25-19, 25-10 on Sept. 12 at MCHS.

Joplin jumped out to a 7-4 lead, then stretched the margin to 18-12 before McDonald County scored five straight points to cut the lead to 18-17.

Joplin scored to end the streak, but McDonald County answered to cut the score to 19-18. Joplin then scored four straight points and six out of the next seven for the 25-19 win.

In the second game, McDonald County scored the first two points, but Joplin responded with nine straight for a 9-2 lead. The Lady Eagles led 16-4 when McDonald County scored four straight to close 16-8, but Joplin closed out the match with a 9-2 run.

Emily Landers and Mattie Leach had two kills each to lead McDonald County’s offense. Leach added two digs, three assists and four service points.

Hollie Garvin chipped in with five service points and five digs while Kaycee Factor had seven digs and Adyson Sanny had two digs and two assists.

Joplin claimed a 25-12, 25-14 win in the junior varsity match and added a 25-19, 25-6 win in the freshman contest.
