JROTC Holds Chris Marion Memorial Service

McDonald County High School JROTC Battalion held a memorial service Oct. 1 for PFC Chris Marion. Marion graduated from McDonald County High School in 2005. Shortly after graduation, he fulfilled his dream of being a soldier upon enlisting in the U.S. Army in Kansas City in July, where he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was deployed to Iraq. On Feb. 22, 2006, he was killed in action while on patrol when his HMMWV (Humvee) was blown up by a roadside bomb.

Chris Marion graduated from McDonald County High School in 2005. Shortly after graduation, Chris fulfilled his dream of being a soldier upon enlisting in the U.S. Army in Kansas City in July, where he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was deployed to Iraq. On Feb. 22, 2006, he was killed in action while on patrol when his HMMWV (Humvee) was blown up by a roadside bomb.

The memorial service in his honor is held every year, during the first week of October to mark his life and his sacrifice for his country. Cadets of the McDonald County High School JROTC Battalion joined together to pay respect to PFC Chris Marion, his sacrifice and his family, to ensure his memory never fades away. In attendance at this year’s memorial service was Velma and Walter Wood, Chris’ parents, as well as his siblings and other members of the Marion family, members of American Legion Post 392. Representi­ng the Patriot Guard, Ray Villa was the guest speaker and presented the Marion family with a remembranc­e flag.

The battalion issues a special thanks to all the parents and family members of the McDonald County community who came in support of this event. Also, thanks to the JROTC Booster Club for providing breakfast and to Prostart for the preparatio­n and for serving breakfast to all those in attendance.
