Christerson Decorates Home For Fall

- Rachel Dickerson

Myra Christerson of Anderson has decorated her home for fall.

Her front porch has a leaf garland, mini pumpkins and a scarecrow. Inside, in her kitchen, she has Jim Shore collectibles, which include angels with different scenes on their skirts, and pumpkins with different scenes front and back. One pumpkin has a house on one side and a scarecrow on the other side. She also collects Boyd’s Bears figurines.

She has a cabinet full of figurines for all holidays — Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Christmas. She has been collecting them for years — probably since they built their house in 1985, she said. She has not gotten her Halloween decorations out yet. She has pilgrims that she puts out at Thanksgiving.

Most of her fall decorations are pumpkins of various kinds.

“When I see a pumpkin, if it’s different I (buy it),” she said.

In her living room, she has a pair of pumpkins that look like stone. She got them in Oklahoma City, where her son lives. A set of ceramic haystacks paired with mini pumpkins came from a gift shop that used to be in Anderson, she said. A pair of gourds in the living room say “Bless this home” and “Happy harvest.” They came from the same gift shop, she said.

“When I see something that’s different, I’ll just buy it. Through the years I collected all this stuff,” she said.

One unique piece is a fox on a pumpkin. Her daughter bought it for her for Christmas. Her maiden name was Fox, she explained.

On the living room coffee table is a table runner with turkeys and pumpkins topped with pumpkins made with grapevine and a copper-like mesh.

Also in the living room is a pumpkin-shaped mesh potpourri holder. In the dining room is a stack of white pumpkins with leaves and nuts.

“I have two sisters,” Christerson said. “They collect things too. It’s something we all do together. They decorate things, too.”

She said fall is her favorite season, and she enjoys going to the corn maze in Southwest City.

“I like it when the trees turn. It’s just so pretty,” she said.

She enjoys Halloween. “When we were growing up we’d go trick-or-treating with a group of kids. We had a lot of fun back in those days,” she said.

She does not get trick-or-treaters now because she does not have any neighbor kids close by.
