Southwest City Police Officers Focus On Safety
Police Chief Bud Gow can summarize his time working in Southwest City simply, and with a smile: “I can’t complain. I love it here. The people treat us well and with respect. The children are wonderful.”
The department prides itself on their camaraderie with residents of all ages — but they have a special relationship with the youth in town.
“My car gets chased more than the ice cream truck,” said officer Rick Lance.
The children’s efforts are always met with enthusiasm and a reward. Officers are known to carry assorted goodies in patrol vehicles, including stickers, sunglasses, coloring books and candy.
The department also strives to make a positive impression at the elementary school whenever the chance arises.
Last month, Gow visited the school on National Checkers Day (Sept. 21, for those unfamiliar) to compete with fourth-grade students in the game of skill.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s my third year and it’s always a blast.”
Gow said he’s proud of the officers in his department and the assets they bring to the table.
“Rafael (Ramirez) is an all-around great officer, but the fact that he’s bilingual is especially beneficial in such a diverse area,” he said.
“Someone talks to me in Spanish two or three times every day,” Ramirez added.
Officer Rick Lance is currently studying to become a certified Crime Scene Investigator. This will provide the department with a trained investigator who has extensive knowledge regarding crime scenes or up-to-date information on the technology and protocol to best process them.
In the coming years, Gow said he would like to see the addition of another officer.
