City Hires Second Full-Time Clerk

Thirteen city-clerk hopefuls filed into Southwest City’s city hall on Tuesday evening.

After reviewing more than a dozen applications and interviewing qualified individuals, Southwest City’s board of aldermen voted to hire Danielle Smith as the city’s second full-time clerk.

Mayor David Blake said employee evaluations have been delayed but he is working to calculate raises for the new year.

City employee Brian Cane “patched the hole” of public works director Jackie Coatney’s absence and provided the public works report.

Cane said the street department has been patching holes along Liberty Road, working toward Honey Lake Acres, and clearing culverts on the south side of town to improve drainage. He also noted the salt-spreader and snowplow are prepared in the event of inclement weather.

Cane said the water department has been working to relocate a hydrant in town and repair an ongoing leak.

Mayor Blake noted the leak has been running, nonstop, since New Year’s Eve and expressed his displeasure at the wasted time and expenses. He told Cane that all supplies for the repair need to be on-site to prevent time lost traveling to the shop for tools.

City Clerk Missy Zinn reported printing W-2s for city employees.

Zinn said she has not heard a definitive answer about the city’s insurance rebate if they were to break the current contract, but she is still seeking a response.
