Coconut Oil For Health And Beauty Classed Offered

- Retha Mitchell

Coconut oil will be the featured ingredient in two classes offered to the public in February. On Tuesday, Feb. 6, the class will be held in the community room of the Southwest City Library. The following Thursday, Feb. 8, the same class will be offered at the Main Library in Pineville. Robin Reichardt will be the instructor.

Coconut oil has been used for many years in many ways by the people of the islands where coconuts are grown, but not until recently has this wonder ingredient been recognized in studies to be useful both in the health and beauty fields. Botanically speaking, a coconut is

a fibrous one-seeded drupe, also known as a dry drupe. However, when using loose definitions, the coconut can be all three: a fruit, a nut and a seed.

Coconuts are a lot healthier than some give them credit for and here’s a little bit about how and why. Coconuts have slowly become a very hot and versatile food commodity and are being used in everything from daily cuisine to beauty regimens. Not too long ago, coconuts had a bad reputation as being an artery clogging, cholesterol packed food that contributed to heart disease. Today, however, the coconut is making a huge comeback as the new miracle food. Coconuts are highly nutritious, rich in fiber and packed with essential vitamins and minerals.

The class will introduce participants to many ideas and uses for the oil, and attendees will be making something that is good for both guys and gals. It could even be a gift idea for a loved one.

Registration is required. Call 417-762-7323 or stop by either of the libraries to sign up. Class starts at 6 p.m. and will last about an hour.
