Chili Supper, Auction Proceeds To Benefit Local K-9

- Sally Carroll

When two high school sophomores learned that a local deputy needed funds to help train and certify his canine as a detection dog, they jumped into action. Caitlin Hall and Emily Emmert decided to help out McDonald County Sheriff ’s Deputy Zack Adamson by hosting a benefit chili supper and silent auction.

The two have enlisted their parents for help, but have undertaken most of the tasks and have been working hard on the project for almost a month.

Proceeds from the benefit, set for Friday evening, will help Adamson train and certify his dog, Shadow, as a K-9 detection dog.

The benefit chili supper and silent auction are planned for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Pineville Primary School,

For $5, those who attend may purchase chili or a chili dog, chips, drink and dessert items are still needed for the silent auction. Anyone interested in making a donation of an item may contact them through their Facebook page, “Dogs for A Cause.”

Hall said deciding to take on the project was easy. Her friend, Emily, texted her one day that Adamson needed help raising money to have his dog trained. The two batted around the idea of a fundraiser and decided that the event could be a good way to benefit others.

“We want to give back to the community,” Hall said.

Hall, Hall’s dad and Emmert met with Adamson to tell him of their plans.

“When we told him, he just looked at us,” Hall said, adding that Adamson looked like he was in disbelief at the idea.

Others also echoed almost the same reaction.

Hall told another friend about the project, as well as one of her teachers. Both responded with similar sentiments: “That’s a big project to take on!”

But Hall and Emmert feel strongly about helping out. Hall admits she is a bit shy but doesn’t have any problem asking businesses or restaurants for food products or donations.

It’s a cause she believes in. The two, who aren’t old enough to drive yet, have had their parents drive them to various businesses to solicit donations.

It’s quite an undertaking, but they hope at least 100 people will attend the dinner.

The girls also plan to use the community hours invested as part of their National Honor Society project.

For $5, those who attend may purchase chili or a chili dog, chips, drink and dessert.

Items are still needed for the silent auction. Anyone interested in making a donation of an item may contact them through their Facebook page, “Dogs for A Cause.”

Adamson and Shadow will be available for photos at the event.

As the event draws closer, the two sophomores are excited to give back. Hall said planning for the benefit has taught her a very valuable lesson: “Helping people does feel good.”
