Council: Standing UTV Ordinance Is Sufficient

CITY CLERK TO PUT OUT BID FOR VEHICLE

- Sally Carroll McDonald County Press scarroll@nwadg.com

Goodman City Council members agreed that the city has a sufficient UTV (utility vehicle) ordinance in place that stands on its own.

The question of being in compliance with the ordinance came to light several weeks ago when Goodman residents Sara and Matt Morgan broached the subject at a city council meeting.

They wanted to make sure they are compliant with the ordinance.

Since that time, Goodman mayor Greg Richmond has thoroughly reviewed the ordinance and believes the policy in place should suffice. The city attorney also has reviewed the ordinance.

Aldermen agreed that the ordinance, which states a UTV can be operated within city limits if utilized for agricultural purposes, should be fine as it is. Police chief Curt Drake said anyone who operates a UTV should be a licensed driver and have insurance for the vehicle.

Richmond suggested that anyone who wants to use one in town should check with the police department.

In other business, aldermen voted to put the 1996 Ford out for bid. City clerk Karla McNorton will place an ad in the newspaper. Bids will be accepted until 4 p.m. on May 1.

Members also discussed the possibility of Goodman’s elementary school being rebuilt in Goodman at the same location. The school was destroyed in the April tornado last year. At the last city council meeting, city supervisor David Brodie said soil samples were completed in January but he hasn’t seen any other crews since that time.

Richmond said he will attend the next school board meeting, which is March 19, to learn more about the project and to express his support for the school being rebuilt in Goodman. Alderman also voted to: Average Linda Sharp’s March water bill;

Approve a new sump pump at the water treatment plant; and

Approve the bills of $42,372.69, including transfers.
