Jones Sur­vives Chal­lenge

Corbin Jones won the 100-me­ter dash at the Big 8 Con­fer­ence on at MCHS. Huechi Xiong, Zack Woods, El­liot Wolfe, Cas­sadi Dowd and Addy Mick all placed sec­ond in events held Mon­day.

Corbin Jones had to sur­vive a coach’s chal­lenge in or­der to be the McDon­ald County High School track team’s lone Big 8 Con­fer­ence cham­pion.

Jones and Mount Ver­non’s An­drew Mon­temayor were stride­for-stride through­out the 100-me­ter dash, but timers at the fin­ish line awarded the win to Jones (11.2) with Mon­temayor in sec­ond, a tenth of a sec­ond back.

Fol­low­ing the race, Mount Ver­non protested the de­ci­sion, but a panel of judges from four other Big 8 Con­fer­ence schools al­lowed the de­ci­sion to stand.

The Mus­tangs got three in­di­vid­ual sec­ond places, one each from Huechi Xiong, Zack Woods and El­liot Wolfe, and an­other in a re­lay.

Xiong and Woods tied for sec­ond in the pole vault by clear­ing 12-6. Wolfe took sec­ond in the shot put with a throw of 45-7.5.

The 4x800 re­lay team of Eli­jah Habert, Gar­rett Spears, Cale Adam­son and Alex Guadar­rama was sec­ond in a time of 8:42.7

Earn­ing third-place medals were Peyton Bar­ton in the dis­cus (141-7), Michael Wil­liams in the long jump (19-11) and Cole DelosSan­tos in the 300 hur­dles (43.6).

Round­ing out the boys’ top six fin­ish­ers were John Howard, fourth, 400, 54.5; Cale Adam­son, fifth, 400, 55.1; Habert, fourth, 800, 2:10.9; Spears, fourth, 1600, 5:04.3; David Lazalde, fourth, 3200, 10:44.1; DelosSan­tos, sixth, 110 hur­dles, 17.6; Joel Morris, fourth, 110 hur­dles, 17.5; Jones, Howard, Saul Gar­cia and Francisco Jasso, fifth, 4x100, 46.8; Lo­gan Ren­ner, Howard, Gar­cia and DelosSan­tos, sixth, 4x200, 1:40.7; Adam­son, Howard, DelosSan­tos and Habert, fifth, 4x400, 3:48.3; Wil­liams, fourth, triple jump, 39-8.5; Bucky Har­rell, triple jump, fifth, 38-9; Wolfe, dis­cus, fourth, 135-9; and Lane Pointer, shot put, fifth, 41-6.25.

La­mar won the boys’ team ti­tle with 171 points. Monett was sec­ond with 100, fol­lowed by McDon­ald County with 99, East New­ton 76, Cassville 68, Mount Ver­non 40, Aurora 28.5 and Seneca 6.5.

Girls’ Divi­sion

Cas­sadi Dowd’s sec­ond place in the 800 (2:30.5) was the Lady Mus­tangs’ best fin­ish. Dowd added a fourth in the 1600 (6:07.4) and ran a leg on the 4x800 re­lay that took third in 10:50.2 and the 4x400 re­lay that took fourth (4:32.9).

Dowd was joined on the two re­lays by Ra­gan Wil­son, Adyson Sanny and Addy Mick. Mick added a sec­ond place in the 3200 (13:46.1) and a third in the 1600 (6:07.1), while Wil­son took fourth in the 400 (1:05.5).

Ruby Palomo was sixth in the 300 hur­dles (53.2) and ran a leg on the 4x100 re­lay that was fifth (54.9) and the 4x200 team that took fourth (1:54.5). She was joined on both re­lays by Erin Cooper, Cait­lyn Bar­ton and Rita San­til­lan.

Bar­ton added a fourth in the pole vault (9-0).

Round­ing out the Lady Mus­tangs’ top six fin­ishes were Jor­dan Witt, fifth, long jump, 15-7 and fifth, triple jump, 32-9.25; Emily Lan­ders, sixth, shot put, 31-10.25 and sixth, dis­cus, 91-4; Chloe Teague, sixth, pole vault, 8-6; and Broook­lyn Win­ters, sixth, 3200, 14:31.7.

La­mar made it a sweep by also win­ning the girls’ divi­sion. The Lady Tigers had 159 points, fol­lowed by Monett with 117, Cassville 82, Mount Ver­non 66, East New­ton 64, McDon­ald County 61, Seneca 26.5 and Aurora 11.5.

McDon­ald County’s next meet is the Class 4, Dis­trict 6, Track and Field Cham­pi­onships set for May 12 at Carl Junc­tion High School.
