Teen Gathers Coats For Kids

- Sally Carroll

McKenna Evenson grew more and more worried about children shivering in the cold as she made her way to school every day.

As the temperatures have continued to dip, Evenson realized youngsters waiting for the bus must be cold.

Now those who are in need of a cozy coat or some warm gloves will have a chance to stay warm this winter, thanks to the local community coat and item drive she launched.

With help from her

family and teacher Leandra Toomoth, Evenson began collection efforts. Needed items include jackets, coats, hoodies, pullovers, gloves and winter hats. Collection points are at the McDonald County High School, 100 Mustang Drive in Anderson, and Wayne Alexander Investments, 601 Main St. in Pineville.

Evenson said she launched the community project after seeing kids out in the cold.

“I wanted to do this project because every morning when I drive to school, I pass by several kids waiting for the bus. As it has been getting colder, I have noticed that the kids either have light jackets on or nothing,” Evenson said.

“I’m in my car with a heater, heated seat and coat, shivering. I couldn’t imagine how miserable these kids were standing in the cold for 5-plus minutes, and I know they are not the only ones in the county,” she said.

Donations will be collected through Nov. 15.
