Season Run Ends At Girls’ Sectionals For Freshman

- Rick Peck

The postseason run for two freshman girl wrestlers from McDonald County High School came to an end at the Missouri Girls Sectional 3 Wrestling Tournament held on Feb. 20 at Harrisonville High School.

Jasyln Benhumea and Gisel Aragon lost both of their matches at the sectionals.

Benhumea lost her opening match in the 102-pound weight class to Lilly Soendker of Sedalia Smith-Cotton in a first-period pin.

In the consolation bracket, the McDonald County freshman was pinned in the second period by Ariel Adams of Blue Springs South.

Benhumea finished her first season of high school wrestling with a 9-12 overall record.

Aragon also lost both her matches by pin. In her opening match in the 159-pound weight class, she fell to Kelsey Burden of Knob Noster in a first-period pin. In the consolation round, Aragon was pinned by Triniti Greiner of Blue Springs South, also in the first period.

Aragon finished the season with an overall record of 12-18.

“As a coaching staff, we couldn’t be more pleased with having two girls reach the sectional tournament in our first year having a separate girls wrestling team,” said coach Josh Factor. “The best part of these girls getting to compete at sectionals is the fact they are both freshmen. Both Jaslyn and Gisel finished without a win in the tournament but gained valuable experience. We are looking forward to seeing what these girls accomplish in the remainder of their high school career and looking forward to seeing them come back next season.”
