FRIDAY’S BEST PICKS

-

8 PM $ The Greatest AtHome Videos Cedric the Entertainer (“The Neighborhood”) hosts this new four-part series of specials, airing on consecutive Friday nights through Aug. 14. Like an earlier special Cedric hosted in May, these new programs showcase the next generation of viral home videos in the age of social distancing, offering a snapshot of our world at an unprecedented time. All the specials are filmed with minimal crews practicing social distancing and produced with extensive safety procedures in place.

8 PM ( DISN) Raven About Bunk’d Two of Disney Channel’s most popular juvenile series, “Raven’s Home” and “Bunk’d,” do the crossover thing tonight in this new one-hour special, which opens as Raven, Chelsea, Booker, Nia, Levi and Tess (Raven-Symoné, Anneliese van der Pol, Issac Brown, Navia Robinson, Jason Maybaum, Sky Katz) embark on an epic road trip to Camp Champion in Maine. Thanks to a GPS malfunction, however, they wind up instead at Camp Kikiwaka, a recreational property with an uncertain future. Mallory James Mahoney, Raphael Alejandro and Shelby Simmons also star.

8 PM ( MAX) MOVIE Hellboy Originally planned to be a sequel to “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army,” this 2019 superhero film turned into a reboot starring David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) in the title role following some behind-the-scenes disagreements with original writer-director Guillermo del Toro and his leading man, Ron Perlman. The story follows Harbour’s half-demon hero as he clashes with the ancient British sorceress Nimue (Milla Jovovich), who wants to avenge a past betrayal by wiping out humanity. Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim also are featured.

8 PM ( SHO) MOVIE Room Brie Larson virtually swept the 2015 best actress awards circuit for her radiant performance as Joy Newsome, an Ohio woman who is kidnapped along with her little boy, Jack (Jacob Tremblay), by the child’s biological father and held captive in a single room for seven years. Despite its grim premise, the movie emphasizes Joy’s selfless determination to stay optimistic for Jack’s sake. The film was named one of 2015’s best by more than 60 critics and publications. Joan Allen and William H. Macy also star.

9 PM ( FOOD) Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Host Guy Fieri calls in some culinary heavy-hitters for the new episode “Takeout: Celebrity Chefs,” which spotlights cooking great restaurant food at home. Kitchen stars Alex Guarnaschelli, G. Garvin, Buddy Valastro, Beau MacMillan and Brooke Williamson send their host ingredients for some of the most popular recipes, then join Fieri and his son Hunter via video chat to cook up the feast remotely.

10:03 PM ( NGEO) 50 Shades of Sharks Sharks have long been regarded as vicious and calculating killing machines, but this new documentary explores examples of rarely seen behaviors that reveal a more intimate side. As seen here, sharks exhibit more multifaceted personalities, occasionally behaving in ways that suggest they can be fragile, collaborative, ingenious and even clumsy. Some of these revelations could profoundly affect how researchers regard these creatures.

11 PM ( HBO) Room 104 The quirky anthology drama series returns for its fourth and final season of 12 new episodes, each telling a tale of characters who pass through a single room at an American chain motel. While that setting is a constant, each episode tells a different story, with an unpredictable tone, plot, characters and time period. Series co-creator Mark Duplass stars in the season premiere, which he also wrote and directed. Others due to check in this season include Dave Bautista, Linda Lavin, Gary Cole, Melissa Fumero, Kevin Nealon and Kevin McKidd.
