9 PM ( HBO) The Weight of Gold
Olympic athletes are celebrated for the strength, skill and endurance they bring to their competitions, but this new documentary from director Brett Rapkin explores the mental health challenges these same champions face. Premiering at the same time when 17,000 world-class athletes were scheduled to be competing in the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan, the film features candid commentary from swimmer Michael Phelps — the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time — along with such other high-profile Olympians as Bode Miller, Sasha Cohen and Shaun White, among many others. 10 PM ( TRU) At Home With Amy Sedaris Amy Sedaris wraps up Season 3 of this daffy reality series with “New Year’s,” a holiday special that airs in midsummer because of course it does. Naturally, the hour includes helpful hostess tips on ringing in a new year from Sedaris, who demonstrates how to build a champagne tower and chats with a local expert on clocks. She’s also got lots of balloons and party songs ready. Now all she needs is a guy to kiss at midnight. Paul Rudd, Chris Parnell and Michael McKean guest star.
10:03 PM ( NGEO) What the Shark?
This new documentary takes a deep dive, both literally and figuratively, into rarely observed shark behavior to understand how this apex ocean predator has been able to adapt to survive conditions at extreme depths of up to 8,000 feet. That far beneath the surface, sharks swim in an inky black void where the darkness would prevent most predators from being able to find their prey, let alone catch it. The pressure, too, would threaten to blow flesh to pieces.
