Pitt capitalize­s on short fields to defeat FSU

Nick Patti had two touchdown runs, Kenny Pickett added a 10-yard TD run and Pittsburgh capitalize­d on short fields to defeat Florida State

41-17 on Saturday night in Tallahasse­e, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Pickett returned to the starting lineup after missing two games due to an ankle injury. The senior completed 21-of-27 passes for 210 yards, connecting with freshman Jordan Addison a season-high 11 times for 127 yards.

Patti came off the bench to score touchdowns from 1 and 2 yards for Pittsburgh (4-4, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Jordan Travis had an 88-yard TD run, but Florida State (2-5, 1-5) couldn’t generate much of a rushing attack otherwise. The Seminoles had just 58 yards on their other 34 carries.

The Panthers scored four touchdowns with the benefit of short fields, completing drives of 32, 41, 47 and 20 yards. Two intercepti­ons as well as a pair of fourth-down stops helped Pitt’s offense.

Brandon Hill also had a 50-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Panthers’ third pick of the game.

SirVocea Dennis had two of Pitt’s seven sacks, which matched a season-best for the Panthers.

Pitt also had seven sacks against Syracuse and Louisville.

A Memphis 34, South Florida 33: Brady White threw a pair of late touchdown passes to lift host

Memphis to a win over South Florida.

After Spencer Schrader kicked his fourth field goal of the game with about 4 1⁄

2 minutes left to extend the Bulls’ lead to 33-20, White threw a 10-yard TD pass to Sean Dykes and then a 9-yard score to Calvin Austin III with just over a minute remaining to go ahead before the Bulls turned the ball over on downs. The final Memphis drives were both over 70 yards and took the Tigers (4-2, 3-2 American Athletic) a little over 2 1⁄ minutes

2 combined to complete.

White was 30 of 50 for 437 yards, four touchdowns and an intercepti­on. He has 81 career TD passes, tying Danny Wimprine (2001-04) for the Memphis record. Dykes had 147 yards receiving and two scores and Austin 102 yards and two TDs. Austin has over 100 receiving yards in four straight games, tying a school record.

USF scored 24 points in the second quarter in taking a 27-13 halftime lead with the teams combining for three touchdowns in just over 1 1⁄ minutes at

2 one point.

White threw a 5-yard TD pass to Dykes in the third quarter before Shrader kicked his third and fourth field goals to set up the dramatic drives by Memphis.

Noah Johnson threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns for USF (1-6, 0-5), which lost its sixth consecutiv­e game.

Daquan Evans had a 51-yard pick-six.

Because of COVID-19 restrictio­ns, attendance was limited to 10,300 fans.
