SUNDAY’S BEST PICKS
4:25 PM 4 NFL Football
Today could be do or die for the Las Vegas Raiders, who hope a win in their regular seasonending road game against the struggling Denver Broncos is just the ticket to get them a Wild Card berth in the playoffs next weekend. The Raiders dominated their AFC West rivals in their first meeting in Week 10, with 200 rushing yards and a defense that intercepted Drew Lock four times paving the way for a 3712 Vegas victory.
8 PM 7 Call Me Kat
Very freely adapted from a hit British sitcom starring Miranda Hart, this new character-driven comedy stars Mayim Bialik in the title role of an eccentric woman who has made such unconventional life choices as being happily single as she approaches middle age. Oh, and spending her entire life savings to open a cafe for cats in Louisville, Ky. Kat’s exasperated mother (Swoosie Kurtz) would like to see her daughter happily married, although Kat has the warm support of cafe colleagues Phil and Randi (Leslie Jordan, Kyla Pratt).
8 PM ( HGTV) Home Town
As a new season opens, Ben and Erin Napier help newlywed friends find their first home. In the aftermath of a tragic loss, the bride, her young son and their newly blended family look forward to a happier journey together. Accordingly, Ben and Erin try to weave the personal story of this newly forged clan throughout the space, which includes a dramatic dining room featuring a hand-crafted wood table, a play area with an upcycled and personalized toy box and a living room with a custom family-tree painting.
8 PM ( BBCA) The Watch
Adapted from the Discworld fantasy novels of Terry Pratchett, this new limited series follows the comic misadventures of the City Watch, the, um, highly diverse squad entrusted with keeping order in the crime-ridden metropolis of Ankh-Morpork. Led by the world-weary Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer, “Game of Thrones”), these improbable heroes — who include a werewolf and a troll — must stop some rogue wizards from resurrecting a great dragon that threatens their city. Wendell Pierce, Anna Chancellor, Lara Rossi, Adam Hugill and Matt Berry (in a voice role) also star.
9 PM 2 Elizabeth Is Missing on Masterpiece
Returning to television for the first time in nearly three decades, twotime Oscar winner Glenda Jackson stars in this two-hour adaptation of Emma Healey’s novel, playing feisty grandmother Maud Horsham, who finds herself confronted with two mysteries as she battles encroaching dementia. The first puzzle involves the whereabouts of Maud’s only close friend, Elizabeth (Maggie Steed), who inexplicably has vanished. The other head-scratcher involves part of an old cosmetics compact Maud finds while gardening. Jackson already has won an International Emmy and BAFTA Award for this performance.
9 PM ( FOOD) Worst Cooks in America
Chefs Carla Hall and Anne Burrell vie to see who better can transform totally hapless home cooks into kitchen masters in Season 21 of this hit culinary competition series. In the premiere, the two professionals size up the potentials in the new field of 14 rookies by having them prepare their dishes for a date night. The premiere is followed by a new companion talk show, “Worst Cooks in America: Dirty Dishes.”
9:31 PM 7 Last Man Standing
Brace yourself for a time jump as Tim Allen’s family sitcom returns for its ninth and final season, which ended Season 8 with daughter Kristin (Amanda Fuller) going into labor with her baby daughter, and Mandy (Molly McCook) expecting her own first child. As the action resumes, Mike (Tim Allen) and wife Vanessa (Nancy Travis) reflect on what their own senior years will be like, as he prepares to retire from his long employment at Outdoor Man. Christoph Sanders, Jordan Masterson, Jonathan Adams and Héctor Elizondo also star.
10 PM 10 The Rookie
Nathan Fillion returns to his role as John Nolan, the oldest “rookie” in the Los Angeles Police Department, as this new crime drama opens Season 3. As longtime fans of the show know, Nolan occasionally has been pushed to keep up with cop colleagues 20 years his junior, but his life experience, sense of humor and sheer grit have stood him in good stead so far. As the action resumes, however, Nolan faces his biggest career challenges yet when he is forced to come to terms with past choices.
