MONDAY’S BEST PICKS

-

8 PM G All American Stories No doubt prompted by the drama series “All American” — which begins its third season next week — this first of two broadcast specials introduces an eightpart documentary program that will be available on the CW Seed digital network. Yogi Roth and the real-life inspiration for “All American,” NFL veteran Spencer Paysinger, present true stories of athletes who overcame respective challenges to succeed on fields of play. Roth interviews the individuals the segments are about.

9 PM ^ American Experience The new episode “The Codebreaker” offers a fascinating portrait of Elizabeth Smith Friedman, a suburban wife and mother whose painstaking secret work as a cryptanalyst for the U.S. government helped send infamous gangsters to prison and brought down a massive, allbut-invisible Nazi spy ring during World War II. Born into a Quaker family in small-town Indiana, Friedman dreamed of escaping that placid life from an early age, but the covert double life she pursued as an adult didn’t come to light until decades after her death.

9 PM ( BRV) Below Deck After days of being forced to play musical bunks, Izzy’s condition deteriorates, forcing her to go into quarantine in the new episode “Blood in the Water.” Meanwhile, Captain Lee treats his weary crew to a relaxing day off at a luxury resort. Unfortunately, the day is spoiled by Rachel’s erratic behavior, leaving the others absolutely mortified.

9 PM ( HGTV) Ty Breaker Ty Pennington enlists the help of some of his fellow superstar designers to help conflicted homeowners who are unhappy in their current space in this new home series. Specifically, Ty and his colleagues present the clients with their options to help them decide whether they want to give their existing property a major facelift or renovate a different property to better suit their needs.

9 PM ( ID) Atlanta Justice The new episode “Speaking for the Dead” opens with the murder of Stephanie Seabrum, who is trying to cash a check at a convenience store when an armed man ambushes her. The assailant robs Stephanie, fatally shoots her, then flees the scene before her boyfriend even has time to react. As that investigation gets under way, Atlanta Detective JD Stephens is summoned to the scene of a double shooting, two teenagers killed in a drive-by. Investigators soon consider whether the incidents are connected.

9 PM ( HBO) 30 Coins In the new episode “The Mirror,” Elena and Paco (Megan Montaner, Miguel Angel Silvestre) receive word of a local mirror that seems to be haunted. As Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández) spends a night investigating the tricks the mirror can play, he begins to feel an irresistible pull into its deadly portal. Macarena Gómez also stars. 10 PM ^ Independent Lens Oscar-winning actor, musician and filmmaker Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”) directed the acclaimed new documentary “A Day in the Life of America,” that captures a portrait of a country in turmoil by filming across all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., during a single day: July 4, 2017. Inspired by a book series by photographers who document subjects over a 24-hour period, the film shares vignettes from individuals and communities on a day of celebration — or, in some cases, protests.

10 PM * The Good Doctor The coronavirus pandemic has taken its toll on Dr. Lim (Christina Chang), but she steps outside her own frayed nerves to try to help a returned soldier cope with a severe case of PTSD in the new episode “Lim.” Dr. Browne (Antonia Thomas) comes up with a possible solution for the situation. Dr. Murphy (Freddie Highmore) has an extreme reaction to a recent loss suffered by a resident he was training.

11 PM ( USA) Straight Up Steve Austin Former WWE Hall of Fame member “Stone Cold” Steve Austin returns to host a second season of his unconventional interview show, which dispenses with the usual couch-and-studio format in favor of Austin and his guest teaming up for some unpredictable adventures, while sharing stories from each other’s lives. Among the guest scheduled for Season 2 are stand-up comic Bert Kreischer, NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre, actor and hip hop icon Ice T, WWE superstar Charlotte Flair, “Jackass” prankster Steve-O, actor Joel McHale and actress-comic Tiffany Haddish.
