Miami, Florida - James fought a long battle with ALS, during which he remained amazingly upbeat and positive. His cherished niece Elizabeth Shields was at his side at the time of his death. He is survived by his sister Gayle Merling of Concord, Massachusetts, his brother Joe Merling of Avon, Colorado, five nieces and nephews, five great nieces, and so many relatives and friends.

James grew up in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. After his initial schooling in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, he was awarded business degrees from Xavier University, Florida State University, and his beloved University of Miami. He enjoyed working for 20 years for Campbell Capital in Miami.

James loved to ride his motorcycle, especially with his friends from northern Florida, and particularly enjoyed Jazz and playing the guitar. He was always proud of his knowledge of food and cooking, especially Cuban food, after working in the food service industry before going into finance. He was devoted to his many friends all across the country, from New York City to Hebron, KY to Montrose, CO to Miami and he treasured his relatives in the Sparks and Bezold families. He loved to speak in Spanish and have conversations with everyone in South Florida. He was known by all for his wit and intelligence.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no services at this time. As James was a dedicated participant in research studies at the ALS Center at the University of Miami, the family would appreciate donations in his memory to the Center at www.miami-als.org.
