Soon after Alvarez’s death, a GoFundMe was started to raise money to support his family. As a way to honor their son, Alvarez’s father and his mother, Liz, decided to use the funds to establish the LA6 Foundation, which would grant a scholarship annually for underprivileged students who shared similar passions as Alvarez in order to give them the opportunity to pursue them.

The first scholarship was awarded last year to the Automotive Technician Training Program at Universal Technical Institute.

The first recipient was an amazing story himself.

Through the Be The Light Foundation — established in honor of the late former Columbus student Ari Arteaga — the Alvarezes found out about a 19year-old homeless boy from Homestead who had been living out of abandoned cars for over a year. The boy expressed a desire to attend a mechanic school and the Alvarezes were able to assist in getting him enrolled at UTI and he has since begun virtual classes.

Even with the ongoing pandemic, the LA6 Foundation has raised funds through sales of masks, stickers, hoodies, shirts and other items.

Alvarez said there are plans for a lacrosse tournament in Lucas’ honor, as well as other larger events.

“The sense of community his passing brought afterward was amazing,” Hernandez said. “He was a great kid and came from a great family. His impact is still being felt.”

Lloyd Harris continued his run of upsets at the Dubai Championships in the United Arab Emiates by beating the third-seeded Denis Shapovalov 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the semifinals on Saturday.

The 81st-ranked South African saved three of the four break points he faced for his seventh win in as many days, making him the first qualifier to reach the hard-court tournament’s final. He had already defeated Dominic Thiem for the first top-five win of his career. Going for his first title, Harris will need to overcome Aslan Karatsev in the final. Karatsev upset top-seeded Russian compatriot Andrey Rublev 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to his first final.

Elsewhere: Daria Kasatkina and Margarita Gasparyan advanced to the final of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. Eighth-seeded Kasatkina rallied from a set down for the second time in as many days to upset fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova 1-6, 6-0, 6-2.Gasparyan saved four set points in the second set before beating fellow wild card Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 7-6 (11-9).It was the first all-Russian semifinals at a WTA tournament, and Kasatkina and Gasparyan will contest the 30th all-Russian final on Sunday.

Soccer: Manchester City’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple of major trophies stayed alive thanks to late goals by Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne in a 2-0 win over Everton in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. Pep Guardiola’s players are sweeping all before them this season, having reached the final of the English League Cup, the quarterfinals of the Champions League and forged a 14point lead in the Premier League. … Record-chasing Robert Lewandowski scored a first-half hat trick as 10-man Bayern Munich kept its four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a 4-0 win over Stuttgart. Bayern only started playing well after Canadian youngster Alphonso Davies was sent off for a bad tackle on Stuttgart’s Wataru Endo in the 12th minute, and the defending champions’ response kept second-place Leipzig at bay before the teams meet on April 4. … Karim Benzema netted twice to extend his scoring streak as Real Madrid moved into second in the Spanish league with a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo.

A Winter sports: French skier Alexis Pinturault secured his first overall World Cup title on his 30th birthday. Pinturault won a giant slalom race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, giving him an unbeatable points lead over Marco Odermatt, who placed

11th in Saturday’s race. The giant slalom was key because Odermatt skips slalom, which is the seasonending race on Sunday. … Making history for her nation, Petra Vlhova won the women’s World Cup overall title as the first Slovakian to be crowned the best all-around skier. Vlhova needed only a top-14 finish in her specialist slalom event, and placed a distant sixth in a race that Katharina Liensberger won by 1.24 seconds in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. The race win earned Liensberger the season-long discipline title, edging Mikaela Shiffrin, who also placed second in Saturday’s race.
