MONDAY’S BEST PICKS

-

8PM G March This new one-hour docuseries explores the marching band culture that thrives on many HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) campuses. That world is viewed primarily through the marching band of Houston’s Prairie View A&M University, where the members devote themselves to both their musical passions and academic life. Among the featured personalities are Tre, a junior bass drummer and new father; Martayvia, the senior piccolo section leader who must make some amends after a recent falling-out with her peers; and Kaylan, senior captain of the Black Foxes dance team.

8PM (TLC) Darcey & Stacey Aniko competes in her first pageant competition in the new episode “Pageant Crowned and Miami Bound.” Elsewhere, Georgi makes an entirely unexpected appearance at Debbie and Reina’s party, while Mike is forced to make tough decisions about his investment in the twins’ company. Later, everyone assembles and heads to Miami to prepare for Darcey and Stacey’s upcoming fashion show. 9PM G 4400 Everyone at the Bois Blanc already is on edge when the government deals yet another blow to the 4400 in the new episode “Give Up the Ghost.” Meanwhile, Mildred (Autumn Best) resurfaces, and Jharrel (Joseph David-Jones) receives some shocking news about his brother.

9PM (A&E) Secrets of Playboy This new one-hour docuseries uses a modern-day lens to scrutinize the Playboy empire built by publisher Hugh Hefner, dispelling dated myths to consider the cultural impact Hefner’s philosophy had on attitudes toward power and sexuality. The premiere, “The Playboy Legacy,” relates how Hefner presented himself as a fiery free-speech advocate who sought to liberate men and women alike. Over the years, however, he used Playboy as a means to manipulate women to compete for his favor. 9PM (TNT) Snowpiercer Archie Panjabi (“The Good Wife”) joins the cast as this acclaimed TV series adaptation of an action movie blockbuster returns for its third season. Season 2 ended as Josie (Katie McGuinness) destroyed the Aquarium car, separating Snowpiercer’s “head” from the rest of the train. As Season 3 opens, Layton (Daveed Diggs) and his inner circle take command of a 10-car “pirate train” to search for Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) and a safe haven with a milder climate where they can restart civilization. Sean Bean also returns as Mr. Wilford.

9PM (HBO) The Gilded Age Created by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”), this new period drama, which opens in 1882, boasts a dazzling cast in chronicling a period of American history that witnessed immense economic change and a dramatic clash between the “old ways” and brand new systems of the era. Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon head the main cast, with a supporting ensemble that includes such theater luminaries as Nathan Lane, Audra McDonald, Michael Cerveris, Donna Murphy, Bill Irwin, Kelli O’Hara and Carrie Coons.

10 PM ^ POV In 2016, attorney Ady Barkan was a swiftly rising star in progressive politics when his life was turned upside-down by a diagnosis of ALS. Since that time, Barkan and other like-minded allies have worked tirelessly to expose glaring inequities in the American healthcare system. Their crusade — literally a matter of life and death for many of them — is the subject of the award-winning new documentary “Not Going Quietly,” which makes its broadcast television debut here.

10:01 PM * Promised Land ABC has released relatively few details about this new drama and its characters, but then again, perhaps painting in broad strokes is the proper way to describe what the network says is “an epic, generation-spanning drama” about two Latinx families who become bitter rivals for power and control in the Sonoma Valley of California. The cast includes John Ortiz, Cecilia Suárez, Augusto Aguilera, Christina Ochoa, Mariel Molino and Bellamy Young (“Scandal”).
