Bay Harbor Islands, Florida - Ramute Bergstron (nee Steikunas) passed away suddenly at home on March 7, 2022.

Ramute was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, and fled her homeland in 1944 during World Word II at age 4, with her parents, Antanas and Sofija Steikunas. The family spent 5 years in a displaced persons camp in Germany until they were accepted into the United States as refugees. She and her family crossed the Atlantic in August, 1949, aboard a troop ship arriving at Ellis Island and eventually settled with relatives in East Chicago, Indiana.

Ramute moved to Chicago in 1961 and married in June, 1966. She moved with her husband, the late Keith Bergstrom, first to Tucson, Arizona and then to Miami, Florida

in 1969. After her divorce she worked at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, Medical Library and Biomedical Communications for 33 years, retiring in 2007 as Administrative Assistant for Administration.

Ramute is survived by her godson, Matthew Pocius, and cousins Danute (Donna) Kline, and son Lance; Kestutis Pocius (Toni) and children Matthew and Teresa; and Algis Steikunas (Brone), along with other second cousins in the United States and Lithuania, and many friends.

Ramute was a strong, independent woman, well respected in her community. Ramute enjoyed her trips back to Chicago, visiting friends and family (especially her dear Uncle Petras). The Lake Michigan shoreline held many fond memories for her. In addition to her many friends in Miami, she always had time for the local Lithuanian Club. Her passing leaves a huge loss.

At her request there will be no visitation or church service in Miami or Chicago. She will be buried in her family plot in St. Casimir’s Catholic Cemetery in Chicago, IL.
