What’s open and what’s closed on Juneteenth in South Florida?

Juneteenth will be celebrated across the country on Monday.

Many will be celebrating when the last enslaved African Americans were liberated, and slavery officially ended in the United States.

Since 1866, Black Americans have celebrated Juneteenth, which commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas — as nearly a quarter of a million Black enslaved persons of the Confederacy were freed following the arrival of Union troops.

But after national protests in 2020 amid ongoing racial inequities in the justice system disproportionately impacting Black people, namely George Floyd and Breonna Taylor,

President Joe Biden recognized it as a federal holiday in 2021.

Florida, along with California and more than two dozen other states, doesn’t formally recognize Juneteenth, meaning it does not show up on calendars as a paid holiday.

Supermarkets, big box stores and malls will remain open and function on normal hours.

As for government buildings, public services and transit, here’s what to know:

MASS TRANSIT

Miami-Dade: Regular weekday service for Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover.

Broward: Regular weekday service.

Tri-Rail: Regular weekday schedule.

GARBAGE PICKUP

Miami:

Miami-Dade: pickup.

Fort Lauderdale: Regular pickup

Broward: Regular pickup for garbage, bulk and recycling.
