How to create a glorious girl’s bedroom

- BY CATHY HOBBS

As kid’s rooms can be challenging from a design perspective, I use storytelling and lifestyle techniques so the design is fun and playful while also feeling cohesive through the use of a consistent design scheme and theme.

Good design should stand the test of time, as opposed to being trendy. Ditch the commercial logos and themes for flirty patterns and prints. As far as color, while pink and purple fill store shelves, citrus colors, including orange, yellow and green will be more timeless. These colors are bright and fresh, and they also provide the flexibility of blending with neutral colors such as taupe, charcoal, brown and black.

Here’s my girl’s bedroom Design Recipe:

Think function first Generate a floor plan that creates distinct spaces or zones (e.g. a sleep zone, reading/study zone and play zone)

Allow plenty of room for circulation and flow

Develop a color scheme

Use color such as accent walls to help define a space

Buy furnishings that are multi-functional and space-saving

Add pops of color through artwork

Add warmth through accents and accessories

Use mirrors (nothing opens a space better)

And a final tip for making the most of a girl’s room...

ORGANIZE! Children’s bedrooms are often smaller spaces that can get cluttered and messy in a hurry. That’s why it’s important whenever possible to create sensible storage solutions so everything stays organized and accessible.

When it comes to organization, in addition to new items, I also prefer using and repurposing ordinary household items into wonderful and useful organizational tools.

BEST DIY ORGANIZING ITEMS

Use a drawer utensil divider to organize jewelry

Buy a multi-drawer toolbox to organize everything

from school supplies to makeup

My favorite new items on the market:

Huggable hangers: They reduce space and keep closets neat.

Clear bins: These are great for out-of-season items, as well as anything that a girl may wish to keep

organized or out of sight.

Erasable boards: They come in all sizes, and you can also buy erasable labels. I believe that effective labeling is the key to effective storage and organization!
