Florida’s cases pass 550,000 and death toll hits 8,765

Florida’s Department of Health on Wednesday confirmed 8,109 additional cases of COVID-19, pushing the state’s known total to 550,901. An additional 212 Florida resident deaths brought the statewide resident death toll to 8,765.

One new non-resident death was also announced in the state, bringing the non-resident death toll to 133.

Miami-Dade County reported 4,141 additional cases and 30 new deaths, according to Florida’s Department of Health. The county has 139,271 confirmed cases and 1,939 deaths. The positivity for new cases was 18.3%.

Health said the county’s single-day high of 4,141 newly confirmed cases is “not reflective of current trends” because it was caused by a backlog of testing data dating back to June 23 from Niznik Lab Corp in Miami Gardens.

“The lab reported over 4,000 cases occurring over the past 7 weeks, but which had not been reported to DOH until today,” the health department wrote on Twitter.

Broward County

reported 475 additional cases and three new deaths. The county has a total of 64,080 cases and 859 deaths. Positivity for new cases: 8.4%.

Palm Beach County

saw 293 additional cases and 14 new deaths. The county has 37,934 cases and 954 deaths. Positivity for new cases: 6.1%.

Monroe County reported eight additional cases and no new deaths and has 1,556 cases and 13 deaths. Positivity for new cases: 8.9%.

On Wednesday, Miami-Dade hospitaliz­ations decreased from 1,623 to 1,568, according to the county.

Florida’s Department of Health reported the results of 81,197 people tested on Tuesday. The positive rate of new cases (people who tested positive for the first time) was 11.89%. If retests are included — people who have tested positive once and are being tested for a second time — the positive rate was 16.60%.

The Broward County Medical Examiner identified the Davie father and daughter who died Monday after he shot the girl and himself as Kenbian and Angela Ng, police said Wednesday.

Police say the 11-year-old daughter was suffering from a “debilitati­ng terminal illness.” Her father shot his only child, then turned the gun on himself. She died in their home in the 14600 block of Southwest Eighth Court in Davie. He died later.
