Hall of Fame opens inductees’ exhibit

- From Miami Herald Wire Services

The Baseball Hall of Fame’s class of 2020 has to wait a year to get inducted because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the careers of Derek Jeter, Ted Simmons, Larry Walker, and Marvin Miller are already being celebrated at the shrine in Cooperstown, New York.

The museum’s Inductees Exhibit is now open. It features one artifact for each honoree and includes: the Yankees helmet Jeter wore when he recorded his 3,000th career hit on July 9, 2011; Simmons’ AL championship ring won with the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers; a Rockies jersey worn by Walker in 1998 when he led the National League with a .363 batting average; and a timeline of Miller’s career as executive director of the players’ union.

The exhibit will remain on display through next year and the Hall of Fame says additional artifacts may be added.

The class of 2020 and anybody elected next year will be inducted next July 25 in Cooperstown. This year’s July induction was canceled in late April because of concerns about COVID-19.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

Athletics 8, Angels 4: Stephen Piscotty, Matt Olson and Robbie Grossman homered, center fielder Ramon Laureano made three nifty catches and Oakland averted at Los Angeles.

Piscotty put the A’s ahead with his solo drive in the fourth inning. Olson and Grossman also went deep off Griffin Canning (0-3) as Oakland’s offense bounced back after being shut out on Tuesday night.

Seven of the Athletics’ nine hits were for extra bases, including a pair of doubles by Matt Chapman.

Laureano contributed with his glove. He remained in Oakland’s lineup while Major League Baseball decides on his appeal of a six-game suspension after being involved in a benches-clearing brawl Sunday against the Houston Astros.

made leaping grabs at the wall to rob Tommy La Stella and Brian Goodwin of extra-base hits.

White Sox 7, Tigers 5: Tim Anderson had four hits and finished a double shy of the cycle, and Luis Robert hit a bases-clearing double to lift Chicago to a victory at Detroit.

Anderson and Eloy Jimenez led off the game with consecutive home runs.

Anderson, who led the majors in batting last year at .335, came off the injured list Tuesday after being sidelined by a strained groin. He had a triple, too, by the end of the third inning and added two singles before striking out on three pitches in the eighth.

Jonathan Schoop and Willi Castro homered for the Tigers, who scored four unearned runs in the fourth before Matthew Boyd (0-2) gave the lead right back.

Dylan Cease (3-1) allowed one earned run and seven hits in six innings. Three Chicago relievers held Detroit scoreless, with Alex Colome working a perfect ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Diamondbacks 13, Rockies 7: Starling Marte homered and drove in four runs as visiting Arizona battered Colorado in a Coors Field slugfest featuring 34 hits, but none by blistering Charlie Blackmon.

Blackmon began the game batting an astonishing .500 for the Rockies. He went 0 for 4, ending his hitting streak at 15 games, and his average dipped to .472.

Blackmon was on deck when Trevor Story, who doubled twice and singled, grounded into a gameending double play.

Cubs 7, Indians 2: Kyle Hendricks pitched six strong innings in his first appearance against Cleveland since Game 7 of the 2016 World Series and Anthony Rizzo homered, leading visiting Chicago to a win to match their best start in 50 years.

Hendricks (3-1) didn’t have much trouble with the slumping Indians, who came in batting a major league-worst .192. He allowed one run and seven hits and handled everyone in Cleveland’s lineup but Franmil Reyes, who got three hits.
