EARNED MISTRUST

-

CAMPAIGN MONEY

Re the Oct. 27 story “How Gimenez halted

Heat voting site:” Millions (or billions) have been spent on advertising, mailings, travel, TV time, etc., starting years before a prospective election.

How about limiting campaigning for any office to six months before an election?

Imagine the money that would save.

In addition, what a relief it would be to eliminate months (or years) of candidates belittling each other to become our public servants. And once elected, whose wishes will they represent? Ours or their political party?

How about all that unspent campaign money going into a fund to reduce our national debt?

Re the Oct. 26 letter

“Just like Castro:” There is no misguided distrust of Democrats as the writer said. Democrats betrayed, at least three times, the Cuban people. So the mistrust is fully earned.

During the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, the promised essential air cover and other support were rescinded at the last minute.

During the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy made a deal with the Soviets to never invade Cuba.

Finally, in 2000, 6-yearold Elian Gonzalez was seized by armed federal agents under orders by President Clinton, removed from his relatives in Miami and forcibly returned to his father in Cuba.

Furthermore, Democrats are assaulting the U.S. Constitution by talking about packing the Supreme Court with additional justices.
