Thompson out for season again

-

The Golden State Warriors said Thursday that Klay Thompson has suffered a torn right Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the upcoming season.

Thompson was injured during a pickup game in Southern California on Wednesday. General manager Bob Myers had said athletic trainers would head to Southern California to accompany Thompson as he got his test.

The injury is a severe blow for the Warriors, who finished worst in the NBA last season as they struggled without Thompson and at times without Stephen Curry (broken hand) who missed more than four months. Thompson didn’t play at all this past season due to surgery for a torn ACL in his left knee.

76ers: The first draft night for Philadelphia under new president Daryl Morey led to a major shakeup for an organization chasing its first NBA title since 1983. Morey undid last summer’s major moves when he traded Al Horford to Oklahoma

City and Josh Richardson to Dallas, shedding salary and beefing up the Sixers’ shooting. Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey was selected with the 21st pick. The Sixers, who also sent the 36th pick of the draft to the Mavericks, acquired guard Seth Curry — coach Doc Rivers’ son-in-law.

Knicks: New York waived veterans Elfrid Payton, Taj Gibson and

Wayne Ellington and declined their team option on Bobby Portis, just a year after signing them in free agency. Kenny Wooten and Theo Pinson were also released and the Knicks declined to offer the qualifying offer to

Damyean Dotson. The moves provide the Knicks with roughly $40 million in cap space this offseason, eclipsed this offseason by only the Atlanta Hawks.
