U.S. soccer’s Amaya tests positive; Perea added for local match

-

U.S. Soccer confirmed that FC Cincinnati midfielder Frankie Amaya

tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Fort Lauderdale, where the U.S. national team is training and playing a friendly Dec. 9 against El Salvador. He will be replaced on the roster by Orlando City midfielder Andrés Perea.

Amaya is in isolation and observing the appropriate quarantine protocols. His positive test came during U.S. Soccer’s camp arrival testing procedures. All of his pre-arrival tests were negative.

No other members of the delegation had tested positive as of Tuesday afternoon.

U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter heaped praise on the Inter Miami FC training facilities after the U.S. team trained there for the first time on Tuesday afternoon.

“I was absolutely blown away by the facility, by the training ground, the stadium,” Berhalter said. “To think that's a temporary stadium, I can't believe it. It’s unbelievable, the design, the branding, coloring, architecture, everything is fantastic. Really great place to train. I could envision this being a spot where we come before we have to bounce off to the Caribbean or Central America.”

Because of the pandemic, capacity for the game will be limited to 2,500 fans. Inter Miami seasonticket holders will have priority through a presale starting on Thursday at noon. Any remaining tickets will be offered to the public on Saturday.
